Another somewhat strenuous trip to be challenged by the Mini-School students is about to go out. The trip consists of a journey from Bemidji, on Bemidji Lake down the Mississippi to Anoka. The trip will consist of some 370 miles of river canoeing. The students and instructors will have to portage over dams and other obstacles, but nothing of great distance is anticipated to be endured. The trip is leaving Oct. 22 early in the morning for the 4 hour drive up there. They will then start on Lake Bemedji and on to the Mississippi. The students are expecting to have some cold weather they know they’re going to face on their 13-15 day trip. Major towns passed through on the trip will be Grand Rapids, Aitkin, Brainerd, Little Falls, St. Cloud, and Anoka. The trip will help the students to learn to survive in cold weather and adverse river conditions. The students are expected back around November 5 if all goes as planned. Doug Berg will be major leader, with assistance by Susan Turnquist, student teacher, and Lesley Seamans, Mini-School aide. There will be 6-15 student participants. This is the 13th canoe trip of Mini-School’s in its 6 years. I am participating and hoping for a fun and adventurous trip and hope everyone elso enjoys it as much as I hope to.
