Nick’s latest Mini-adventure was to Cheap Skates roller skating rink. Nearly 40 Mini-Schoolers participated in this form of insanity, and 58 Clear Springs Elementary students from “The Unit” program joined us. It was truly a success.
The little kids added a lot to the fun—they look so cute when they fall. Roger Ruther and Pete McComber were two of the highlights of the morning’s skate. Both of these hot rodders helped teacher Linda navigate her beginner wheels. Pete would drag her along at extraordinary speeds while Roger would throw in comments like “you’ve got to cross your skates over around those curves.” Then he’d go into a little cross-over magic, causing Linda even more bruises on the backside. Then came Pete’s shouts of, “hey Lester! Watch this one!” And as I’d glance over, I’d see Pete do a quick 360 in the air, then fly into the wall. And to top it all off, we did the “hokey pokey,” turning ourselves around on skates; shaking, falling, singing, and laughing all the way.
Beginner and expert alike, everyone had a gas. Even the blister didn’t feel so bad when the fun was remembered.
