The best book I’ve read in awhile is Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier.
The story is set in the South during the Civil War. After semi-recovery from a neck wound sustained in battle, Inman, the main character decides he’s had enough of war and undertakes the long walk home to Virginia. He is sustained through his journey of incredible privation, savagery and near fatal mishaps by his memory of his home, Cold Mountain, and the love he bears for a woman he left behind.
Actually, the story is just as much the woman’s. The chapters alternate between what is happening to Inman and the development of his love’s character, a wealthy society belle left destitute by the death of her father and the cruelties of war, her only possession a small plantation that she has no idea how to manage.
The story has a strong plot line, good character development, a realistic picture of the Civil War South, romance and tragedy. It’s a good read. I recommend it highly.
